Reading a digital economy 7 electricity meter

Taking a reading from a digital electricity meter either to shop around for a better energy deal or just to send the energy company a meter reading is pretty straight forward.

If you are on an economy 7 electricity tariff then there will be two rows of numbers similar to those shown in the photograph below:

Standard Tariff Digital Electricity Meter

The top set of numbers are for the low rate sometimes called the night rate.

You read the numbers from left to right and ignore the last two red numbers. In this case the electricity meter reading is 42908.

The bottom set of numbers is the day rate or higher rate for electricity. Again you read the numbers from left to right and ignore the last two red numbers. In this case the electricity meter reading is 73440.

Often there are lights to show which rate of electricity you are currently using. In this case you can see the 'normal' light is on which indicates that the meter is currently recording daytime rates.

You can use these numbers to provide your energy company with a meter reading or use them to provide a new energy supplier with the latest reading when you switch energy providers
